The story follows the religious struggle of Haji Ahmed, a Turkic poet and Sufi, who is sent to Baghdad by the esteemed scholar of his time, Pir Yusuf Hamdani. Upon arriving with his dervish companions, Haji Ahmed finds Baghdad in turmoil, with enemies plotting to destroy the once-glorious city.
